Hello, and welcome to Concealed Carry Illinois. Many of you are, I’m sure, looking forward to the day when the State of Illinois begins to issue concealed carry permits. My name is Dan Brewster and I am an NRA Certified Pistol instructor. I also have Rifle instructor certification, as well as current Range Safety Officer credentials. I am a lifelong shooter and veteran, serving in both the 172nd Light Infantry Brigade (Alaska) and the 101st Airborne. I initially became interested in becoming a certified instructor due to my involvement with the Boy Scouts. I serve in a number of roles in the Three Fires Council (Fox Valley area), one of which is as a Merit Badge counselor for the Rifle Merit Badge. I recently participated in the Boy Scout National Jamboree in West Virginia and there we introduced 15,000+ Scouts from around the world to the shooting sports.
The primary purpose of this site is to offer training for those that are interested in obtaining a concealed carry permit in the State of Illinois. The recently passed carry law in Illinois will require applicants to have the following training:
An applicant for a new license shall provide proof of completion of a firearms training course or combination of courses approved by the Department of at least 16 hours, which includes range qualification time under subsection C of this Section, that covers the following:
(1) firearms safety
(2) the basic principles of marksmanship;
(3) care, cleaning, loading, and unloading of a concealable firearm;
(4) all applicable State and federal laws relating to the ownership, storage, carry, and transportation of a firearm; and
(5) instruction on the appropriate and lawful interaction with law enforcement while transporting or carrying a concealed firearm
At this point, though, the Illinois State Police have not defined training curriculum required for the issuance of a concealed carry permit. Most instructors, and many in the shooting community, believe that the NRA Courses will form the basis for at least part of this training. As the includes all sections above except Section 4, plus live fire qualifications, I think it’s a good bet that the will serve to complete most of the requirements. Having said that, nobody knows at this point what the State Police will define as a training standard.
My goal is to offer the required training – once the training requirements have been articulated. I’ll post links to the training classes here on this website and will offer price-competitive training that is safe, fun, and meets the requirements of the state. If you’re interested in attending one of my classes, please drop me a line at email@example.com and I’ll put you on this list. Once the training requirements have been outlined I will publish the classes dates/times and pricing. I would urge caution when you see other folks offering training for concealed carry – at this point, as of July 30, 2013, the training curriculum has not been defined!
